The Big List Of 25+ Of The Best Craft Books

I’ve always been fascinated by crafting, but for some reason, I never thought it was for me. Maybe it’s because I’m not naturally skilled in visual arts or crafts. Whenever I tried to create something, it would end up looking nothing like the original inspiration. This lack of confidence held me back from pursuing my creative interests, such as sewing curtains, painting furniture, and embroidering napkins. However, at the age of 40, something shifted within me.

I began questioning why I needed to be ‘good’ at things, and suddenly, crafting became an all-consuming passion of mine! I started taking in-person classes at Public Space One, where I learned typesetting, letterpress, and printing techniques. Then, I moved on to crochet and sewing classes at Home Ec. Workshop. As I delved deeper into the world of crafts, I realized that I didn’t have to be ‘good’ to enjoy making things, and I’m actually quite good at some of them!

When the pandemic hit, in-person classes came to a halt, but it was then that I discovered the joy of flipping through craft books for inspiration. These books filled my knowledge gaps, taught me new skills, and provided a sense of accomplishment. Around the same time, Art Office emerged, offering virtual art-classes that connected me with fellow makers. It’s been two years since then, and I’m still participating in these sessions!

So, here are 25 of the best craft books that have inspired my journey:

School of Sewing: Learn it. Teach it. Sew Together by Shea Henderson

School of Sewing: Learn it. Teach it. Sew Together by Shea Henderson

My first sewing class was based on the ‘School of Sewing’ book, which offers a unique approach to learning and teaching. Unlike many craft books, this one caters to both beginners seeking to learn and experienced makers looking to refine their skills. The project’s core concept is simple yet effective: gather a group of enthusiasts, and have each member work on a different sewing project in each session.

With 12 projects in total, the book allows for a year-long learning experience, with each participant taking home a finished product after every meeting. The projects start with basic tasks like creating a pillowcase and gradually introduce more complex skills, such as adding zippers or working with mitered corners. As someone who was new to sewing at the time (I didn’t even know what a bobbin was!), I found that having an instructor’s guidance helped me immensely during my early attempts.

However, for those with some basic sewing knowledge, this book is ideal for gradually building skills one step at a time.
