Must-Read Books Based On Your D&D Class

When the well runs dry on creative character ideas in Dungeons & Dragons, it can be a frustrating experience. But fear not! This list of must-read books based on popular D&D classes offers a treasure trove of inspiration for your next adventure. And who knows? You might just find some ideas that are adaptable to other tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs).

The world’s most popular TTRPG, Dungeons & Dragons, has recently faced backlash due to its proposed replacement of the Open Game License (OGL). The OGL allows third-party creators to produce and distribute D&D-related content within certain boundaries. This license also enables writers of unofficial supplements to monetize their work while retaining ownership rights.

Under the new proposal, Wizards of the Coast would be able to utilize content created by third parties without permission, royalties, or even notification. Fans were understandably outraged. In response to the backlash, Wizards eventually rescinded its plans to replace the OGL. However, the damage had already been done; many loyal D&D players turned their backs on the game.

During this two-week period, Pathfinder publisher Paizo witnessed a surge in sales of the Pathfinder Core Rulebook, selling eight months’ worth of copies. This experience highlights the importance of community involvement and trust in the TTRPG world. If you’re not a D&D player due to concerns related to the OGL, I empathize with your decision.

Nevertheless, these book recommendations can still serve as inspiration for characters in other TTRPGs, such as Pathfinder, Mage: The Ascension, or Stars Without Number.
